King 2 Hearts episodes 17-18

Show is still a strange creature. There is good and bad mixed together. Obviously the good keeps me watching, even completely involved at times. Other times the bad pulls me out, but I step back in because I want to follow them to the end.

For me, one thing this show does really well is portray a group of people coming together as a new family. This is one of my favorite kinds of stories. Not necessarily an actual family; it could just be a group of people who are thrown into a place or situation together, and they become very close to one another. Loyalty, trust.

There's something to be said for male characters who, if not actually bad, are morally ambiguous, or rebels, or dangerous yet somehow good. (Seriously, I could go on and on, but that's not what this is about.) He walks through the borderlands. If he's not one of the protagonists, they need him. Or maybe he's an antagonist who... is cool. I've said before that I hate brainwashing and mind control tropes. It might be one of my least favorite things ever. So I watch this show like I've watched certain other shows: loving parts of the story, hating other parts.

I loved that Hang-Ah gets (part of) theteam back together to rescue Jae-Ha. At the carousel. Which was somehow simultaneously ridiculous and fantastic.

Jo Jung-Suk continues to impress me with his physical acting. Especially when his character is nervous, or repressing some emotion. He's really good at that.

Beta testing this weekend, so I don't know when I'll get to anything. There are two King 2 Hearts episodes to watch, and I've got six more episodes of Smiling Proud Wanderer, and approximately 43,298 episodes of Iron Empress left to go.

Also doing a bit of random rewatching here and there. Last weekend it was LOCH and Red Chamber.

There were a lot of scenes I enjoyed this week, either for their intensity or because I was very involved in the emotional moments.

• The Queen Mother: "I won't abandon you"
• "I'm just one woman with a man deeply rooted in my heart."
• "Go home"
• "Your Highness, you have to act a bit more disappointed."
• Anything involving Jae-Shin's new winged friend.

I decided last week that I'm going to watch each week's pair of episodes together. Then at least sometimes I can move right into the next episode after angst. So I guess I'll be watching these on Saturday morning.

After 6 episodes, I'm definitely into the story. I was taking a break from Iron Empress to watch some cdrama, and planning on getting back to it tonight... but now I'm kind of tempted to continue my Smiling Proud Wanderer marathon.
